Medecins Sans Frontieres Tomorrow-Tokyo Back to Diary Index |
Tomorrow - Tokyo Tonight I will doing a Q and A after the 6.30pm screening at the Curzon Mayfair. Tomorrow I leave for Tokyo . The last time I was there (for a press junket for The Tango Lesson) I remember well lying in the bath at 4am , jetlagged out of my skull, watching a show on the rubberized television at the end of the bath which must have been devised for insomniacs. The programme consisted entirely of very long shots of ‘nature’. A field, a mountain, a lake. Nothing happened, almost nothing moved. Muzac tinkled soothingly. I remained relentlessly awake. By the end of the first twelve-hour day, however, I had talked myself into a hallucinatory maelstrom of self-doubt. Who? What? Why? I loved the encounters with Japanese journalists, though, they were so intense and precise; with good manners taken to the level of an art-form. I felt clumsy in my attempts to be equally respectful, warm without being intrusive, and so on. I will let you know how it goes this time. back |
