Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger

Dear Sally

My name is David Klein. I am a musician living in Switzerland. Ever since I saw one of your films, I am thinking about a collaboration with you. With my band "World Quintet" http://www.worldquintet.com I have finished a project for which we have put the poems of Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger to music.

Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger was born in Czernowitz (Bukowina) in 1924. At the age of fifteen she began writing her own poems. Following the invasion by German troops of Czernowitz which had been seceded by Romania to the Soviet Union in 1940, her family was forced to take up residence in the ghetto in July 1941. Miraculously she managed to get her hand-written album entitled "Blütenlese" (Pick of Blossoms) to a girl friend before being deported to the concentration camp "Michailowska" in the Ukraine in 1942. She died there on 16th Dec. 1942 of typhus.

Her poems speak of sadness and longing, but also of hope, joy and love (a love which was more of a dream than reality, dedicated to a friend who later died fleeing to Palestine). In her poems one finds no reference to the time in which they were written. They remain fresh and alive. The thoughts of a young girl captured in 1941 are lived today to the same extent.

Twelve of the best and most renowned German singers are each interpreting one poem. They all come from very different musical directions and have done an amazing job of unassumingly interpreting Selmas poems from the depths of their souls.

I would very much like work with you on a visualisation of these haunting poems.

I am looking forward to your feedback.

Best wishes
David
