A question of fantasy as reality
Hi Sally-
I saw "Yes" at Tribeca. I was stunned. So lyrical, so graceful. Thank you for that. I'm struggling with trying to portray a story where two characters meet, argue and then separate. The rest of the (short) film is about each of them trying to come to terms with or communicate with that other character, but it only happens in their minds. Each of the characters appears in the other's reality throughout the day. Then they reappear in each other's reality at the end. Here's my question: how necessary is it to delineate what is true from wht is fantasy? Isn't it possible to blur the lines between the two, or does that make it confusing and disorienting? (I'm not opposed to disorientation). Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Nina

the laws of fiction
the question of what is 'true', what is 'fantasy' and indeed what is 'realism' nestles deep in the heart of all fiction. your question falls into a debate that has raged, in one form or another, for centuries. you will find some of my thoughts about it elsewhere in this site, in the blog and in response to a question from 'gayana' which started on the reviews page of this message board. Simon Abkarian also wrote a beautiful piece which you will find there.
of course you will find your own solutions in the telling of your story and can research the truth, in whatever sense you mean it, both in the world around you and in the laboratory of your imagination.as filmmakers we are here to slowly re-write the laws of fiction.
